SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER AT OUR MONTHLY MEETING FEBRUARY 21
The Minneapolis Area Chapter of the DFL will host Special Guest Elliot Payne, President of the Minneapolis City Council, at the monthly meeting on Saturday morning, February 21 . In addition to his regular duties, Council President Payne has been active on the frontlines of protecting Minneapolis residents from unlawful ICE abductions every day.

He will speak to us about what the city is doing and what the city could do to support and protect all of us. Members - check your email for the Zoom link and the agenda - it was sent out on Wednesday Feb 11 (just before we got confirmation of Council President Payne's appearance). MESSAGE FROM THE MINNEAPOLIS AREA CHAPTER LEADERSHIP - January 21, 2026
IT’S UP TO US TO PROTECT THE MINNESOTA WE LOVE
With the recent announcement that the US Department of Justice has issued subpoenas against Governor Walz, Attorney General Ellison, Minneapolis Mayor Frey, St. Paul Mayor Her, and Hennepin County Attorney Moriarty, it’s clear that the Trump Administration is coming at the DFL. The Trump Administration is also coming for every neighborhood in the 5th Congressional District - sending federal agents to lawlessly harass, detain, and hurt us. It’s important now that we as DFLer’s embrace this moment and engage in the resistance to ICE.
SUPPORT RAPID RESPONSE TEAMS AT OUR SCHOOLS
One of the key ways we can express the Senior Caucus motto of “Making a better world for our Children, our Grandchildren, and Ourselves!” is by supporting the school rapid response teams at every Minneapolis Public School. It’s easy - find out the start and end times of the schools near you, show up a little before those times, find the individual wearing a purple stocking cap, and humbly ask them how you can help. Purple-hatted parents have been trained in deescalation and non-violence, and other key skills. Just ask them how you can be most helpful. For security and safety reasons you may need to find a neighbor already connected to vouch for you. They’ll appreciate your helping carry the load as they juggle jobs, parenting, and everything else

ATTEND YOUR PRECINCT CAUCUS ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3 - KEEP THE WORK OF DEMOCRACY ALIVE
At this time in our beloved cities, we are called on to exercise our democratic muscles. Over the next few months, DFLers across the state will be gathering to 1) endorse candidates for office; 2) consider resolutions that will create the DFL’s official platform; and 3) elect party officers at every level. And it all starts with precinct caucuses on Tuesday, February 3rd. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and caucuses start at 7.
Find your DFL precinct caucus location HERE.
First-timer? Learn more HERE.
HELP SHAPE THE DFL PLATFORM
The DFL Senior Caucus created seven resolutions on issues from making healthcare more affordable to supporting medical aid in dying to fostering economic security. Bring one or more of them to your precinct caucus to help get them in the DFL Party Platform! You can find them and print them off HERE.
2026 CAUCUSES AND CONVENTIONS OVERVIEW
Not sure what happens after your precinct caucus? Here's an overview of what happens when, and ways you can engage in the process. Questions? Contact Cara Letofsky, Political Director,
And here are some short-term and long-term ways you can apply your skills and develop our party.
DFL SENIOR CAUCUS APPROVES POLICY RESOLUTIONS FOR 2026
NEW RESOLUTIONS CAN BRING SENIOR ISSUES INTO THE DFL PLATFORM
The statewide DFL Senior Caucus developed resolutions that embody policies on important senior issues. Please take them to your precinct caucus so they can go through the process to become part of the DFL Platform. The DFL Platform lacks a section that focuses on senior issues. We need to create an Aging with Dignity category in the platform, and work to add the other policies listed here.
The resolutions are in the format required by the DFL. Just print them out, fill out the top part, and take them with you to your precinct caucus on February 3. Be prepared to present them briefly and encourage people to vote for them.
And recruit allies: you can take multiple copies to the caucus meeting point on February 3 and ask friendly people to fill in the top part. You might be able to reach more caucuses than just your own this way. Ask them to submit to their precinct and vote for the resolution. After all, you don't need to be a senior to support these resolutions!
Create Aging With Dignity Category in the DFL Platform
Help Older Minnesotans Live Independently
Make Healthcare More Affordable
The Minneapolis Area Chapter supports these resolutions. To learn more about how to present and move resolutions at your precinct caucus, attend the training "To Caucuses and Beyond." Information and registration form are just below.
Even in the midst of this lawless invasion by the Trump and GOP-backed masked terror squad, we continue in the practice of democracy. In MN that starts with precinct caucuses. (And we can have a bit of humor to relieve the stress too.)
Training: To Caucuses and Beyond, January 29, 7 pm to 8:30 pm, at Meraki, 100 W. 46th St, Mpls 55419. You can register at https://tinyurl.com/BeyondCaucus

DFL Senior Caucus Condemns ICE Killing of Renee Good
Seniors Involved in Active Resistance
January 8, 2026
Yesterday ICE agents fired point-blank into the face of a young mother who was attempting to drive away from them. They refused to allow a doctor who was present to provide aid to 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, an unarmed, non-threatening ICE observer. Renee Good did not survive the unprovoked attack; she leaves behind a six-year-old child whose father died several years ago, and two older children.
“Renee Good could be our daughter. Her orphaned child could be our grandchild. This monstrous attack affects all of us,” said Kay Hendrikson, DFL Senior Caucus Chair. “Our members are horrified by this incident. We fear for the safety of senior immigrants, many citizens and legal residents, are afraid to leave their homes for fear of being abducted by ICE agents. We stand with our members who are part of this active resistance; we are proud that they are lawful, present, peaceful, and making an impact. We know that this is an attack on our brown and Black community members."
“Did our members plan to spend their retirement days defending their fellow and sister Minnesotans? Of course not. But our seniors are leaders and we are needed to lead. We urge them to be safe – let someone know where you are, and remember there is safety in numbers.”
According to Bibi Black, who chairs the Caucus’ Minneapolis chapter, “Many of our Senior Caucus members are involved in assisting immigrants. We pack and deliver food to those who are too afraid to leave their homes to shop. Members who are nurses visit families who need immunizations. And, like Renee Good, we observe and track ICE. This is a senior issue – we are involved, and there are senior immigrants who fear for their lives – and it turns out, rightfully so."
“There were many, many seniors who attended last night’s vigil for Renee Good,” Black added. “We stood side by side with our children and elected leaders. We will continue to speak up and be present."
“Minneapolis is our city and we love it. This is our Minnesota and we will not allow armed intruders to take over. Seniors are here and we are vigilant. We are peaceful, but we will not back down.”
Our Winter Party Potluck and Community Sing-Along on December 20. What fun! Thanks to Jim Davnie and his team of volunteers who organized, set up, brought delicious food, and cleaned up. It was heartwarming to see each other in person. And it was a great warm up for participating in the "MN Loves Our Immigrant Neighbors" Rally and March.

Lt. Gov. Flanagan and Rep. Craig mingled with the crowd and inspired us with brief, rousing speeches.

Betty Tisel and Brett Hesla led us in singing songs of fun, resistance, hope, and community.

There were about 60 of us there. I wish I'd gotten more pictures of us having good fun and good conversations. -Susan Lynx, Secretary
